Cockermouth is a small market town located in the county of Cumbria, in the northwest of England. It lies on the banks of the River Cocker, just a few miles from the coast of the Irish Sea, and is situated within the Lake District National Park. The town has a long history, with evidence of human settlement dating back to the Stone Age. It was an important centre for the wool trade in medieval times and later became known for its coal mining industry.
