Brief Overview of Worksop Worksop is a historic market town located in the Bassetlaw district of Nottinghamshire, England, near the borders of South Yorkshire and Derbyshire. It sits on the River Ryton and is close to the northern edge of Sherwood Forest. Worksop is famously known as the "Gateway to the Dukeries" due to its proximity to several grand historic ducal estates, including Clumber House, Thoresby Hall, Welbeck Abbey, and Worksop Manor. Key Features and History Historic Core: The town's history dates back at least to the Domesday Book of 1086. A castle and the Augustinian Worksop Priory were established around 1103. The surviving Priory Church of St. Cuthbert and St. Mary, with its Norman architecture, is a major landmark. Industrial Heritage: Worksop grew significantly after the building of the Chesterfield Canal (1777) and the arrival of the railway (1849). It was a key center for agriculture, malting, and, most notably, coal mining until the pits closed in the late 20th century. The Dukeries: The surrounding area is rich in stately homes and parklands that once belonged to powerful ducal families. Today, places like Clumber Park (National Trust) are major attractions for nature and history lovers. Mr. Straw's House: A unique National Trust property in the town, this house is preserved as a fascinating time capsule of middle-class life from the early 20th century, left untouched since the 1930s. Modern Economy: Following the decline of mining, the local economy has shifted, with a focus now on service industries, manufacturing, and distribution, benefitting from its central location near major road networks (A1 and M1).
